About this title

Synopsis:

Cyprus: An Island Apart is an account of the personal experiences of the author as he travelled here and there throughout Cyprus over a three-year period. He visited all the places of major cultural and historical interest on the island, north and south and, in sometimes light, sometimes serious vein, he describes what he saw. With equal warmth, joy and perception, he tells of the ruins, the monasteries, the old castles, the big towns and little villages, the Byzantine churches and ancient temples and, as well, of course, of the people he met along the way. He also attempts to explain briefly the political impasse that exists today. Always in his journeys the author takes with him the discerning and curious visitor who has limited time to spend in the country, or who alternatively wants to mix a couple of weeks beach holiday with a modest and selective tour of the major places of interest on the island.

From the Author:

Cyprus: An Island Apart was written to give visitors to Cyprus, who usually stay on the island no more than a week or two, a readable background to the island's history and culture, its archeological treasures and its two religious contexts. It also attempts, however briefly, to tell something of the political realities that today still continue to divide its two peoples. Running through the book are anecdotes of the author's personal experience which reveal more than any direct comment could, the rich chiaroscuro of life that is Cyprus today.
