About this Item

Gale, John. A DAMASK OF THE DEAD. North Yorkshire: Tartarus Press, 2002. Limited to 250 signed and numbered copies. Elegantly designed and bound with book ribbon, Fine cloth in Fine dustwrapper. This volume consists of short-short weird and elegant fantasies somewhat reminiscent of Clark Ashton Smith, but with interior evidence of the influence of Aloysius Bertrand (an influence on Baudelaire and on Tom Ligotti), evoking a kind of nostalgia for death. The Tartarus ad copy ain't wrong: "finely-polished, decadent gems, each an exquisitely-cut tragedy pared to its archetypal essentials. The perfumes of the East suffuse these tales of poets, lovers and kings who, despite the luxury and beauty of their surroundings, desire something beyond. Bookseller Inventory # 892
