Description:

8vo. pp. [ii], 86, recto only. Original cloth-backed card covers. A typescript for a play translated and freely adapted for the stage with much new material by John Holmstrom and John Barton. It was first performed at Eton College School Hall on March 3 1956. Margaret 'Peggy' Ramsay (1908 – 1991) whose name and address is on the title-page was a theatrical agent who represented many of the leading dramatists to emerge from the 1950s onwards, including Alan Ayckbourn, Eugène Ionesco, Joe Orton, Stephen Poliakoff and David Hare. After discovering Joe Orton, then living on National Assistance, she persuaded producer Michael Codron to stage Orton's 'Entertaining Mr Sloane'. Ramsay represented the dramatist, and then his estate, for the rest of her life. John Holmstrom (1927 – 2013) worked for the BBC for much of his life. Holmstrom and Ramsay were good friends, and in the early 1960s he left the BBC to work as a script reader in her agency. He later returned to the BBC. John Barton (born 1928) is a director and an advisory Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company (which he helped found in 1959). Set during the French revolution, 'Danton's Death' was Georg Büchner's (1813 – 1837) first play. At the start three revolutionary groups are presented - Danton's supporters, Robespierre's supporters, and those who do not agree with how the Revolution has evolved. It follows Danton's role in the events that led to his arrest and death. Covers a little discoloured, some rubbing and creasing, internally clean. Sound but used VG minus. Light wear otherwise very good. Bookseller Inventory #
