About this Item

First edition, American issue imprinted McGraw-Hill but produced by Thames and Hudson in England and printed in Germany. With 940 illustrations, 172 of which in beautiful full color on full page plates, 110 original reconstructions, 645 black and white photographs, and drawings and 48 maps and chronological charts. Folio, publisherís original powder blue buckram lettered on the upper cover and spine in gilt, in the original color pictorial dustjacket. 404pp. A very good and appealing copy, the paper used in the production of the text block is prone to browning and this copy is toned lightly and evenly as is typical, but the color plates on glossy paper are all very fresh and bright, the cloth in excellent state but for some very slight sunning along the top edge only, the jacket a bit worn and chipped but still very attractive. The greatest archaeological study of its kind ever published and the first and still finest world survey of early human cultures. The text was co-written by fourteen highly distinguished experts and is the culmination of years of research and study. The illustrations are of course especially noteworthy and very finely produced. The work spans the globe and periods of time from Stone Age hunters and gatherers up till about roughly 100 AD. Highly influential and of great critical success this book would inspire an entire later series on Civilization. Bookseller Inventory # 22612
