(The Arabs of the region pronounce it Goomrahn; according to their tradition, it is the site of Gomorrah.) Archeologists there found the remains of the community which had produced the scrolls, and which had stored them in the caves for safekeeping. Pottery and coins showed that the Qumran Community, or monastery, had come into existence around 140 B.C. and that its main occupation had ended about the time of the first great Jewish revolt against Rome, A.D. 66~73. All that we know about the community's history is what can be inferred from its literature, as preserved in the scrolls. In order that our members might read The Dead Sea Scrolls with the greatest understanding possible, We called Upon One of the world's leading experts on the subject, Dr. Geza Vermes, one of the pioneers of Qumran studies. He is perhaps best known for his Discovery in the Judean Desert, first published in France in 1953 and since translated into English. The book has become a standard volume on the scrolls.
