Description:

New Expanded Edition, 216 pages. Almost 300 illustrations, Hardcover with a dust jacket. This important book embodies the first in-depth study ever undertaken of the enigmatic Fallschirmjagergewehr 42 (FG42) - certainly the most audacious small arm to come out of World War II. The FG42 was a Luftwaffe development. Plans for its introduction as a specialized weapon for Paratroop use were laid in 1942 after Operation Merkur, the 1941 battle for the island of Crete, had initially turned in a debacle for the outgunned German airborne troops who landed there. The elitist nature of the FG42 denied it a normal path of development through Army Ordnance channels, and in consequence the FG42 was dogged by a virtually constant series of modifications throughout its brief span of existence. Far from the two or three basic types of FG42 normally referred to, therefore, the series actually consisted of an estimated twenty different variations. This book depicts and describes seven basic models of the FG42, from the earliest one-off (the type 'A') through the first or 'early' production series (the type 'E') with its distinctively swept-back handgrip and intricately machined receiver, the ultimate if short-lived triumph over Germany's growing shortages of exotic raw materials, the pressed-steel type 'G'. An excellent book. Language: eng Language: eng Language: eng. Bookseller Inventory #
