Book Description New York: Stringer & Townsend, 1856., 1856. SINGLE VOLUME ONLY issued as part of a twenty volume set. i-xiii, [1], [13], 14-597 pages. Hardcover: H 19.75cm x L 13cm. Original half-leather binding (brown leather spine; marbled paper boards with brown leather corners). Some scuffing to leather spine decorated with five minimally raised bands delineating six compartment all with still fairly bright (but not vibrant) gilt stamped decoration or lettering; fourth compartment from top has two-line gilt stamped title "2 | Deerslayer" upon leather label once probably a strong maroon but now quite faded/darkened; second compartment from top has two-line gilt stamped series title "Cooper's | Choice Works" with leather brown label having slightly lighter tinge than rest of leather (undoubtedly also faded from its original tone). Marbled boards rubbed with leather corners worn; large patch of peeling to front board's surface paper adjacent to fore-edge. Toning to marbled edges; bottom edge's marbling barely discernable; marbled endpapers retain bright color; tear at top 10cm of front free endpaper's gutter edge. Past owner's old ink signature on first front flyleaf; bolder ink inscription of different owner dated March 1891 on second front flyleaf. Foxing and some toning throughout; light moisture stains/tidelines to some early leaves. Binding is firm. A good+ antiquarian copy. First published in 1841, THE DEERSLAYER was the last of Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales to be written (preceded by "The Last of the Mohicans" published 1826, "The Pathfinder" published 1840, "The Pioneers" published 1823, and "The Prairie" published 1827) although it was a prequel to the other Natty Bumppo stories with its plot being set during the years 1740 to 1755. This posthumous edition of THE DEERSLAYER is Volume II of "Cooper's Choice Works" multi-volume set issued by New York publisher Stringer & Townsend. Bookseller Inventory # JUN17-06632
