About this Item

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1966. First Edition. A fine copy in black cloth with gilt spine lettering in a near-fine, second-issue dustwrapper (black title on front flap) which shows original price of $5.00. There is light soiling to the white background of the dustwrapper and minute wear to the spine ends. Overall, a nice, solid copy.Despair is the hugely inventive and derisive story of Hermann, a man who undertakes the perfect crime--his own murder. The book was first published in Russia in 1936, and translated to English by the author in 1937. Most copies of the 1937 English edition were destroyed by German bombs during World War II; only a few copies remain. Nabokov published a second English translation in 1965, the basis for the Putnam edition. Bookseller Inventory # 009150
