Vol. I frontis is of John Evelyn by Godrey Kneller also initials S. Bragge on right lower corner. Vol. II frontis is of Mary, wife of John Evelyn, by J. Stephenson. Vol. III frontis is of David Leslie, First Lord Newark, Sir P. Lely, px. Vol. IV is of John Selden, by Phillibrown. All with tissue overlay. A total of 45 illustrations in complete set. A 15 pp catalogue of Bohn's Various Libraries is divided between front and rear fly-leaves and endpapers of each volume. Gilt lettering debossed within wreath design to spines of royal-blue, blind stamped, cloth-covered boards. Volumes are solidly bound and clean. Vol. I, 434 pp with appendix ; Vol. II, 398 with appendix and fold-out Pedigree of Evelyn family ; Vol. III, 399 pp ; Vol. IV, 469 with General index to the diary and correspondence. A total of 1,700 pp. "John Evelyn (1620 -- 1706) was an English writer, gardener and diarist. His diaries, or memoirs, are largely contemporaneous with those of the other noted diarist of the time, Samuel Pepys, and cast considerable light on the art, culture and politics of the time," (Wikipedia).
