Foster listed alphabetically in one volume all recorded noblemen and knights and their arms. He based his work on medieval rolls and reference material that was available to him at the time. A vast number of these were illustrated, but as John P B. Brooke~Little states in his introduction to the present volume, the earlier book "lacked that quintessence of heraldry ~ colour." The Dictionary of Heraldry takes Foster's original work and the vibrant colors of feudal arms thereby enhancing a comprehensive reference volume with the simple, bold, and noble colors of heraldry. The scope of Foster's work has never been surpassed and the original edition, a rare and expensive volume, is one of the most sought after illustrated books on feudal arms. The Dictionary of Heraldry makes it possible for medieval scholars, designers, artists, and those with an interest in feudal arms and art to add this wonderful volume to their libraries. This beautiful book serves as more than a reference; it is a work of art in itself. Joseph Foster was born in 1844 and died in 1905. His principal interest in life was genealogy, to which were added that of compiling indexes and the study of heraldry. Although he started life as a printer he soon adopted genealogy as his principal occupation. He published many pedigrees privately and was noted for his Pedigrees of Lancashire Families and a comparison volume on Yorkshire families. He published several editions of a Peerage and Baronetage and founded an heraldic and genealogical periodical. In 1892. he was accorded the honorary degree of Master of Arts of the University of Oxford in recognition of compiling his Alumni Oxonienses, in the eight volumes of which are listed, with brief biographical notes, all those who matriculated at the University between 1500 and 1886. His heraldic work was principally confined to this present work and to three volumes which he edited for the "De Walden Library", namely A Tudor Book of Arms, Some Feudal Lords and their Seals and Banners, Standards and Badges .
