Description:

First edition thus. With engraved Greek-style headpieces throughout printed in black and ochre drawn by Paul McPharlin. 8vo, original ochre and cream paper covered boards decorated in black and ochre, the spine lettered in black, in the publisher’s original slipcase with matching printed paper label. 141 pp. A very near fine copy, the specially made paper for this printing just a bit toned as it is prone to do, the spine just a hint mellowed. A HANDSOME PRINTING OF THE WRITINGS OF THE GREAT STOIC PHILOSOPHER. A handsome and well-printed book. The Discourses were oral lectures recorded faithfully by Epictetus’s pupil, the historian Arrian. Epictetus believed that "the universe is governed for the best by an all-wise Providence and all men are brothers." He spoke in the vernacular Greek and wished to appeal to all people, not just the intellectuals. Bookseller Inventory # 24058
