The hero, a Jewish doctor, confronts anti-Semitism and political corruption in the city of 'P-----" (clearly Peoria) . "The oldest Jewish community [in Illinois] outside of Chicago is Peoria, where the first Jews arrived in 1847. A benevolent society was organized in 1852 and the first congregation, Anshai Emeth, was formed in 1859" (EJ, 2007) . As an interesting aside, Betty Friedan, the "mother" of the second wave Feminism of the 60s, cites the Antisemitism she experienced growing up in Peoria in the 1920s and 30s as a factor in her Feminist consciousness (Jewish Women’s Archive, SUBJECT(S) : Physicians -- Fiction.
