About this Item

27pp, dbd. Old institutional stamp, else Very Good. Greene explains why he resigns his commission as Colonel of the 14th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers [Heavy Artillery]: the Army dismissed Andrew Washburn, a Major in the 14th, on trumped-up charges for embezzling public property. The charges resulted from "a deep-laid conspiracy," fueled by envy and resentment. Greene had promoted Washburn from "a simple Lieutenant" to Major, "and then tried to make him a Lieutenant Colonel." The unfairness of the court martial-- particularly its composition, and the exertion of command influence-- is detailed, and explained and supported with appended documents and correspondence FIRST EDITION. I Dornbusch [MA] 12. Nicholson 261. Not in Nevins, Harv. Law Cat., or Sabin. Bookseller Inventory # 11533
