Cover is considerably lighter than posterboard. HISTORY. This catalog was published for the exhibition DOLLS AND DUTY at The Rhode Island Historical Society, September 20, 1989 - August 12, 1990. "1989 is the centennial year of the establishme nt of the doll making business of Martha Jenks Chase (1851-1925) of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Martha Chase is a case study in middle-class America's response to industrialism. In her story, we see woven together many threads of the Progessive Era, a period in American history (roughly 1890-1920) marked by a series of political, social and economic reforms aimed at addressing the profound changes wrought by urbanization and industrialization. " The catalog consists of an Essay, which gives the history of Chase's life and business, pages 9-32, by Miriam Formanek-Brunell, Ph. D. , Assistant Professor of History, Denison University, followed by Footnotes and a 13-page Checklist of the Exhibition which is a listing of the exhibition's displayed items. There are 17 b/w photos, most of which are of dolls. Bookseller Inventory # 38645
