"The series of images in the paintings and works on paper are formalized abstractions of experience; paralleling, and in a sense underlying these symbolic progressions, are the sketchbooks. The latter contain a variety of observed incidents -- landscapes, people, urban scenes, clouds, to name only a small number of a kaleidoscopic variety of visual perceptions that are not preparatory sketches for anything, but are vivid notations, invariably catching a myriad of detail with an economy of means. Arnold replaces in the paintings process what is the recording of information and feeling of the sketches through the constant manipulations of materials. The application of glazes, the layering of oil over acrylic paint, the use of small brushes or palette knife loaded with wax, the emulsion of paint in a medium of beeswax, oil, and turpentine, this is the alchemy or brew out of which grows the gestural mark, that summarizes the process and finally becomes the iconic symbol in the painting."
