Many photo illustrations, facsimiles, drawings, caricatures, cartoons, etc. Title-page in red and black. Gray and black textured endpapers. Original heavy black textured rexine binding with gilt lettering worn off. Little spine tip and corner wear. Minute tear on corner of front endpaper and top margins of three pages, o/w contents very good, clean and tight. TIPPED-IN TYPED PRESENTATION SLIP: "Mit grus fun Yehoash" [With greetings from Yehoash". Text is almost entirely Yiddish except for some of Sholem-Aleichem's Russian letters. *** Superb well-illustrated and researched Memorial Book published on the tenth anniversary of Sholem Aleichem's death. As stated in the subtitle, books contains autobiographical sketches, bio- and bibliographical documents and materials, his letters to family and relatives, writers and friends, unpublished juvenile writings, literary remains, noted subjects, ideas and sayings, illustrations, facsimiles from manuscripts and letters, reminiscences, characteristics and tales about him from relatives and friends. *** SHOLEM ALEICHEM, pseudonym of Sholem Rabinowitz, 1859-1916, popular Yiddish classical author. *** YEHOASH, pseudonym of Yehoash Solomon Bloomgarden, 1872-1927, Yiddish poet, Bible translator and Sholem Aleichem's good friend. *** In this volume there are texts of two letters from Sholem-Aleichem to Yehoash, one with facsimile, dated April 23, 1916, the last letter of a literary character from Sholem Aleichem, written twenty days before his death. It relates to Yehoash's book "Fun Nyu-York biz Rchovot" [From New York to Rehoboth] which began publication in the the New York Yiddish daily "Tag". There are also two additional mentions of Yehoash in the text. *** The 110 Sholem Aleichem letters in this book, although only a fraction of his complete corrrespondence, is still one of the two fullest selections available today. *** Laid in are short biographies of Sholem Aleichem and Yehoash.
