About this Item

Fascinating account , the author arrives in China in 1879 and serves in the Chinese Navy until 1885. Then he joins the Chinese Maritime Customs until 1905 and then the Chinese Postal Service until his retirement in 1929. Then Famine Relief in 1930. Well illustrated with 24 Plates, Colour and B&W, and a Large Fold-Out Map at the back. Frontispiece illustrated in Colour with "The Azure Dragon". Other illustrations show horrible tortures and executions, Sea Battles and some B&W Photos. Dark Blue cloth cover with Gilt Lettering to spine. 348 Pages. 810g, 9" Tall. Some edge wear with very small tears and some fraying at spine ends. Tips of corners worn. Previous owner's name on ffep and a decorative Bookplate with no name pasted on endpaper. Frontispiece and first page of Preface loose. Only a very occasional spot of foxing. Some Plates have a very faint brown stain in top margins and one text page has a small triangular piece torn from top margin. Otherwise pages and plates in very good, clean condition.
