Description:

First edition (not stated) SIGNED BY THEORA HAMBLETT. 66 pages (plus covers). Spiral-bound paperback; H 14cm x L 21.5cm. White pictorial paper covers, slender streak of soiling upon front cover but with stronger soiling to rear cover. Slight bowing to front cover caused by three laid-in newspaper clippings: death notice in Memphis Commercial Appeal for March 8, 1977; obituary and funeral services article from The Oxford Eagle, March 7, 1977; and an Appreciation from an Oxford Eagle columnist for the same date. Metal binder's top three rings now rusted causing some small associated discoloration to leaves but interior pages are otherwise bright and clean. Features 42 color reproductions of Hamblett's paintings divided into their respective dream or vision sequences with explanatory text reviewing the inspiration and artistic approach to the important images in each series. Born in the rural Lafayette County community of Paris, Mississippi, Theora Hamblett (1895-1977) is now recognized as one the state's premier twentieth century artists with her distinctive primitive folk art style and outward simplicity belying abstract religious imagery frequently displayed within the context of rustic Mississippi scenes. A very good copy of a quite uncommon publication of which most copies were sold directly in her Oxford, Mississippi studio with Theora Hamblett's signature upon the title page along with a handwritten correction to the booklet's price on the front cover verso.
