A biography of Dr. Joseph Edison Walker (1880-1958) who was born into poverty in Tillman, Mississippi but rose to prominence in the Memphis, Tennessee African American community by founding Universal Life Insurance Company in 1923 and the Tri-State Bank & Trust Company in 1943. The former was among the top ten black-owned insurance firms in the country in the 1930s. A local leader of the NAACP and the Memphis Negro Business League, Walker was a civic activist as well and was the first African-American to run for political office in Memphis since Reconstruction when he campaigned for a seat on the Memphis school board in 1951 (his campaign post-dates the book) affronting Democratic Party political boss Edward Hull Crump (1874-1954). Although Walker failed to win he successfully motivated the black electorate and nearly tripled black voter registration in Memphis from 7,000 to over 19,000 (nearly 20% of the eligible African American population).
