1 volume facsimile and accompanying text volume with introduction and notes on Durer's wood engravings by Erwin Panofsky. Large folios (16.75 x 12 inches), collotype facsimile in black leatherette and gilt turquoise cloth, 15 full-page woodcuts with facing pages of black-letter text; 8-page text volume in gilt red card wrappers. Together in black, red and gilt cloth slipcase. Facsimile of the 1498 German edition (it was published also in Latin in the same year) from the copy in the British Museum. In his introduction, Erwin Panofsky describes Durer's Apocalypse as ". . . the earliest book designed and published by an artist as exclusively his own undertaking." Durer's woodcuts depict the martyrdom of St. John as told in the book of Revelations. Edition of 535 numbered copies, this #517. Both volumes fine in moderately worn slipcase. We had our open bookshop in the town of Sonoma for a total of 17 years, including 9 years at our East Napa St. location, however, as of April 13, 2013 we have closed our doors. Our business is now conducted online, by appointment, and at the approximately 8 antiquarian bookfairs at which we exhibit annually. INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS PLEASE NOTE: Foreign orders are shipped at cost. International surface mail is not offered by the US Postal Service; all orders are shipped by air. We utilize the $30.00 Priority Mail International flat-rate mailer (4 lbs maximum weight) when we can adequately protect the book within. Oversize books will in most cases cost a minimum of $50.00 to ship overseas. The ABE default shipping rates are based on orders for 1 book at a maximum weight of 2.2 pounds. In many cases (large books, sets, insurance) this does not reflect the actual shipping cost. We will request additional shipping compensation through the Abebooks system when necessary.
