McKishnie [1875-1946] was a nature writer from Quebec who is best known for LOVE OF THE WILD (1910). Francis Harris (Franz) Johnston [1888-194], who produced the fine illustrations in this book written for children, was a Canadian artist, briefly associated with the Group of Seven, exhibiting at only their first show. In 1921 he left the group to become Principal at the Winnepeg School of Art and to pursue his own exhibitions. Johnston's style became increasingly realistic throughout his life and he was particularly interested in the quality of light reflected from snow. He taught at the Ontario College of Art and in 1927 changed his name to Franz Johnston. During his career, Johnston achieved considerable success and found a great following among the public.
