Book Description Doubleday, U.S., 1963. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Janina Domanska (illustrator). 1st Edition. Better known as a crime and mystery writer, and regular contributor to Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, Ms Mayberry has here written a little children's novel about a girl living on an Alaskan island with nine dachshunds that provide life lessons as well as company. What is really fascinating about this book is the work of the Polish born artist, author and illustrator, Janina Domanska. She is better known as a writer and illustrator of her own children's books, particularly the Caldecott Honor book, "If All the Seas Were One Sea" (1971). If you could see the bold, colorful, almost abstractly designed illustrations from that book up against the delicate pencil drawings from this dachshund offering, you'd never, in a decade of Alaskan winters, guess they were from the same hand. Incredible variety of styles from this talented artist. Anyway, the book has some slight soiling to the nice blue cloth covers, and a small stain at the bottom of the rear endpapers, but otherwise a very good copy indeed. Bookseller Inventory # 000451
