About this Item

Folio (15" X 11"). Self-cover. (4pp). Near fine. Minor binding traces along margin. A tight and bright, all-around superb issue of this daily that ran from 1830 to 1858. Consisting largely of classified ads (several with small graphics of stagecoaches and packet ships) and some newsy tidbits cobbled from various sources -- the most interesting of which appears on the second page, bottom of the second column (out of four) and upper third of the third column: Titled "Col Crockett's Dinner with President Adams," this anecdote involves the legendary frontiersman, soldier, politician and folk hero Davy Crocket (1786-1836). The Tennessee congressman here recounts, in typical cornpone slang style, a brief meeting with outgoing President John Quincy Adams shortly after Crockett first took office in 1827. The "King of the Wild Frontier" was at the height of his fame in the popular media around this time, and the following year would publish his colorful, occasionally truthful autobiography, "A Narrative of the Life of David Crockett, Written by Himself." Two years later, of course, he would die at the Battle of the Alamo at age 49. Bookseller Inventory # 39288
