About this Item

RARE EDITION OF THREE DICKENS ADAPTATIONS (printed into one book) IN A GEM-LIKE COMMERCIAL BINDING AND NEAR-PERFECT STATE OF PRESERVATION! N.d. (ca. 1888). Red decorative cloth, with rich Neo-Classical, Americana Fancyiana design elements blind-stamped onto fr. board & spine; gilt spine label. Pagination as follows: Dame Durden, frontis, from wood; vi, 175 pp.; Smike, 174 pp.; Two Daughters, 190 pp. + 7 pp. pub cat. at rear. Ink gift inscr. to f.f.ep., dated Xmas 1888; cheap pulp paper bit tanned; occasional dog-earing; cloth shows only slight signs of shelf-wear - unlike most of these cheapie knock-offs, this is a beautifully preserved copy. Originally published as part of a series for young readers of Dickens, in separate vols., DeWolfe, Fiske & Co. cut some costs by cramming three into one, in the process removing all illus., save the frontis. Yet another spurious American piracy, this one of an adaptation (a piracy of an adaptation, hmmm). - just the sort of inscrupulous charlatanism that Dickens was railing against within these pages - a bitter irony of the sort that Master Chuzzlewit himself would surely appreciate! In 28 years of bookselling we have not previously seen this edition. Size: 12mo. Bookseller Inventory # 000983
