Crossing North America by train and by ship across the Atlantic Ocean. Visiting Paris, Rome, Naples and Pompeii on his way to Egypt and beginning his tour of the Holy Lands. Syria, Palestine, and Jerusalem (spending most of the time there). He visited Bethlehem during Christmas and the Dead Sea, along with Hebron, Beersheba, Gaza and Jaffa. One chapter is devoted to Mohammedanism (sic) and then Paine gives an account of his travels home through Constantinople, Athens, Corinth, northern Italy and back to California by the southern route in North America.
