About this title

Synopsis:

Book by Clarke, Mary, Crisp, Clement

From Library Journal:

This book was first published in England in 1984; both authors have written on the history of dance independently and are co-authors of Making a Ballet and Dance: an illustrated history. Despite the focus on the ballerina by many even today, Clement and Crisp demonstrate that the male was the central figure in dance in its earliest beginnings. Romanticism in the 1830s shifted the focus of ballet from the male to the female and that focus has once again started to shift. In chapters on the dancer as athlete and partner, his role historically and his relationship to the choreographer, these critics have researched their subject from Louis XIII to Mikhail Baryshnikov. The volume is heavily illustrated and popularly written. It should appeal to those with even a mild interest in dance. Joan Stahl, Enoch Pratt Free Lib., Baltimore
