About this title

Synopsis:

Book by Biggar, Bill, Myers, Joe

From Booklist:

The authors present a convincing case for parental monitoring of children's cyberspace activities. It's not simply a matter of cost, they say, even though dollars are definitely a factor. It's also a matter of personal safety. Focusing largely, though not exclusively, on commercial services, and using numerous examples to point out online hazards (including a dialogue set up to trap a sexual predator), they zero in on the problems of maintaining anonymity and allowing children unrestricted access to chat rooms and graphic files. Examples occasionally seem extreme ("most GIFs [graphic files] available on-line are smutty" ), but the tone is not overly strident. The authors acknowledge the Internet as a valuable, important communication tool that is enormously difficult to regulate (although some regulatory procedures have been tightened since this book was written) and lay the responsibility for protecting one's children on an individual's own doorstep. Age-appropriate suggestions for monitoring children's online use are included, as is an extensive listing of Internet sites kids can visit safely. Stephanie Zvirin
