Synopsis: Booklist/Reference Books Bulletin 20 Best Bets for Student Researchers 2002
Booklist/Reference Books Bulletin Editor's Choice Reference Titles for 2001
Dangerous Planet explains the science behind earthquakes, volcanoes, tornadoes, avalanches, mudslides, tsunamis and other devastating natural disasters. More than 180 black-and-white photographs, illustrations and maps bring the text to life.
"This new set for young adults from UXL is sure to be popular...Most school and public libraries will want to add this excellent and useful set."
-- Booklist (December 2001) (Booklist 20011201)
"This three-volume set, which will be appreciated for earth science reports,..
The writing is lively and engaging, and numerous sidebars give engrossing true accounts of major disasters. Excellent black-and-white photos, illustrations, and maps add additional information. Each chapter has words to know for the particular topic, follow-up book and periodical readings, and useful Web sites. Large-scale natural disasters are always fascinating. Practically any chapter could be incorporated into a movie, and some already have been. This set is an extremely worthwhile addition to most middle and high school collections."
-- VOYA (June 2002) (VOYA 20020601)
"Gr 5-8—For libraries needing reference backup on the ever-popular topic of widespread catastrophes, Engelbert offers scientifically detailed discussions of 16 types,..With the exception of wildfires and the partial one of global warming, none of these disasters is human caused, so this is best regarded as a companion to such resources as The Associated Press Library of Disasters (Grolier Educational, 1997) or Peggy Saaris' Great Misadventures: Bad Ideas That Led to Big Disasters (UXL, 1998)."
-- School Library Journal (May 2002) (School Library Journal 20020501)
"Engelbert has received favorable reviews from School Library Journal and Booklist on her Activist, Rebesls, and Reformers, Complete Weather Reference, American Civil Rights, and Technology in Action sets. Her three-volume set on world disasters is rich in both facts and eye witness (primary source) accounts of the incredible devastation wrought on the lives of victims, their families, and, at times, whole towns. Black-and-white photographs present stark visuals on the aftermath of major disasters... The preface states the objective of the series clearly and concisely. The scope of the work covers the history of major disasters, how people react to and try to stop effects, and successes and failures of both man and machine to battle these monsters of nature. The work is well organized and arranged. Important words are listed in a glossary in the front section of each volume, as well as in highlighted inset boxes throughout appropriate chapters. Major disasters are alphabetically listed. There are bibliographies of works referenced in individual chapters plus a cumulative bibliography for the entire volume that is divided by the type of work cited. A cumulative index for the set can be found at back of each volume. Although seup much like a textbook, this compact encyclopedic series is an excellent resource for reports. It is recommended for use in both school and public libraries."
-- ARBA (2002) (ARBA 20020101)
"A topic of great interest for kids is treated in a way that satisfies curiosity but also manages to sneak in a lot of science. Using a disaster-by-disaster format, UXL exercises its usual selectivity, focusing on the kinds of events that the middle-school audience will find most fascinating."
