About this Item

Contents: Preface. Introduction. 1. The forces of darkness: meaning and legacy. 2. The dark powers in King Henry VI, Part 1 and Part 2: more Mundane than supernatural? 3. King Richard the third: a study of Richard's heart of darkness. 4. Hamlet: a prince with a sword of darkness against the powers of darkness. 5. Macbeth: a Villain-hero's tryst with darkness. 5. Conclusion. Select bibliography. Index. The book explores how the Shakespearean world and the ideological make up of the age influenced Shakespeare's use of a recurring theme, i.e. the supernatural in his plays. These dark forces namely the witches, ghosts and devils as well as omens and curses have been used repeatedly in a number of Shakespeare's plays. A study of the sub-text of five plays in particular i.e. Henry VI, Part I. Henry VI, Part 2, Richard III, Hamlet and Macbeth reveal that operating beyond and behind these so called dark forces is a nexus of political and religious powers which used these contemporary beliefs in order to make others scapegoats for their own sins.
