About this title

What, oh what, is it that ticks and tocks in the mind of a child? “It” is everything from homework angst, to birthday wishes to make-believe. The world of children is rich with emotions, fantasies, and even fears. What’s in the Dark? includes 52 poems and illustrations that explore that universe, connecting with young children through rhyme and whimsical humor. The title of the book itself invites children to answer a mysterious question. How far can their imaginations take them? What visions can they dream?

About the Author:

Catherine Mai James was born on July 9, 1973 in Saigon, Vietnam. As the Vietnam War was ending, her family immigrated to New Jersey, where the author and her older sister were raised, shopping malls, Garden State Parkway and all. Catherine attended the Pennsylvania State University where she earned her B.A. in journalism. After a stint in New York City as an editor in the beauty and fashion magazine world, she decided to embark upon a career in education. She then earned a M.Ed. at the George Washington University (often referring to herself as a “Med” student, which many of her friends found to be awfully silly humor). She went on to teach English literature and writing at an independent school in New Jersey where she lovingly doled out piles of homework to her students. Catherine is now married and raising two spoiled cats. What’s in the Dark? is her debut as both poet and illustrator.
