About this Item

This is the first edition of Dark Laughter by Sherwood Anderson, issued as a signed limited edition, and published by Boni & Liveright in New York in 1925. It is number 238 of 350. This copy is in very good condition. No dust jacket was issued with this printing. Dark Laughter, Sherwood Anderson's 1925 novel, took up much the same theme as his 1923 novel Many Marriages, though he read James Joyce's Ulysses in between. The influence of Ulysses is clear in Dark Laughter. Dark Laughter was the only bestseller of Anderson's lifetime. It has been out of print since the early 1960s and most contemporary critics consider the novel a failureóa failure due, in large part, to what many today consider racist and sexist language and themes. The original three quarter velum and black cloth boards are in good condition. Sherwood Andersonís signature appears in red lettering on the front panel -- clear and crisp, as is the black lettering on the spine. On the front cover there is some very faint soiling. The pages within are fine condition. The hinges are holding strong. Bookseller Inventory # 1016
