About this Item

Somewhat hard-to-find novel by the noted Egyptologist. Unfortunately, as others have noted, the translators' preface advises us "The original work contains a series of notes establishing the authenticity of the incidents and descriptions, but as they have no connection with the story it has been deemed advisable to omit them from the translation." Gee, thanks, Henry. There is a light dampstain to the outside 1/4 inch of all pages, not impinging on any text. Brown-coated endpapers attractive, front hinge shows a slight crack but not yet wide enough to merit a repair. Geometric devices stamped in black to red cloth front board, and stamped in blind to rear. Gold gilt spine titling remains bright. 368 pp. followed by 12 pp of publisher's ads, which are notable mainly for listing hardly any books of modern interest, save the "new" (1874-76) 15-volume edition of the works of Prescott, including the History of the Conquest of Mexico and the History of the Conquest of Peru. Georg Moritz Ebers (1837-1898), German Egyptologist and novelist, discovered the Egyptian medical papyrus, ca. 1550 B.C., now named for him, at Luxor (Thebes) in the winter of 1873¿74. Now in the Library of the University of Leipzig, the Ebers Papyrus is among the most important ancient Egyptian medical papyri, indicating the ancient Egytians understood the antibiotic properties of fruit molds, and is one of two of the oldest preserved medical documents anywhere. Ebers early conceived the idea of popularizing Egyptian lore by means of historical romances. "Eine ägyptische Königstochter" was published in 1864 and obtained great success. Ebers also turned his attention to other fields of historical fiction -- especially the 16th century (Die Frau Bürgermeisterin, 1882; Die Gred, 1887) without, however, matching the success of his Egyptian novels. Reduced from $95. Bookseller Inventory # 002658
