1859 London: Chapman & Hall. 1st single-volume bound edition. Beautiful and rare. Red half calf with red-brown textured fabric clothboards; corners in calf; hubbed spine with generous gilt filigree; gilt rules. All edges beautifully marbled in tones of red, blue, and cream. Endpapers beautifully marbled. Textblock clean, tight, square, tanned, unmarked, appears to be unread. Still tightly bound. Foxing on first few pages, and on scattered pages throughout. Illustrated with 43 black&white engraved plates, by "Phiz" (Hablot Knight Browne.) Extremities scuffed; 2 corners worn through. Overall, this is a beautiful and rare collector's item. The story was first serialized in monthly parts, July 1857-April 1859. Davenport Dunn is a rogue, loosely based on the notorious Irish politician and swindler John Sadlier. In Lever's novel, Dunn is a tycoon banker who has enriched himself at the expense of his fellow Irishmen after the calamities of the 1840's.
