Synopsis: Oblong Sm Quarto, Unpaginated, Black Cloth
... is simply the most beautiful horticultural book ever produced in Canada. The photographs, many evocative of Georgia O'Keefe's paintings, were taken at We're In The Hayfield Now Daylily Garden near Toronto." -- Frank Jones, The Toronto Star
Dr. Norman S. Track's photographs have captured some of the most intriguing Daylilies this continent knows. The magical light of the Ontario summer mornings appears perfectly timed. Natural beauty enhanced to a point that the reader may touch the paper expecting to sense the texture of the blossoms. Track's pictorial veneration of a rather common species of garden plant comes four hundred years after introduction by John Gerard. 'Daylilies' pays particular compliment to the genus, highlighting the amazing breeding work accomplished by two Canadians, Douglas Lycett and Henry Lorrain.
The Cinderella-like history of the Hemerocallis (Daylily) is chronicled in an interesting, almost narrative format enhanced with interstitial quotes from notables such as Aristotle, William Wordsworth and Albert Einstein. It is obvious that a great deal of concern and attention to detail was paid towards the layout and presentation of Track's superb photographs. A large, clear font tastefully enhanced with an artistic colour sense will enable even those visually challenged the ability to enjoy this Canadian success story. A short read, spiced with just enough
"horticulturally-challenging" vocabulary and absolutely breath-taking photography. Readers will most likely leave the text to the second or more review of the book, enjoying the rich textures, colours and even the names of the vast selection of Daylilies.
Douglas and Henry are the consummate example of hobbyist turned entrepreneur. The company name even alludes to the rapid growth industry these two plant breeders have found themselves in...."We're In the Hayfield Now Daylily Gardens."
Daylilies will make an excellent coffee table book for professionals, novice and non-gardeners alike. An excellent four hundredth birthday tribute from a talented Canadian trio; Douglas Lycett, Henry Lorrain and Dr. Norman S. Track. -- Ken Beattie, "Canada's Favourite Gardener"
Eye-smashing, breathtaking photographs of daylily flowers by Dr. Norman S. Track are the feature of this 96 page book. The horizontal format coupled with the attractive use of colored borders and white spaces provide complementary backgrounds for a series of vivid images showing daylilies "up-close and personal." The daylilies hybridized by Canadians Douglas Lycett and Henry Lorrain are the worthy subjects. The text is a short historical account of the development of the modern daylily from its humble Chinese beginnings. Charming quotations from prose and poetry add interest to many pages. Emphasis is placed upon the Munson line of tetraploids, evidently the inspiration for the work done by Lycett and Lorrain. Because the cultivar descriptions are quite brief, the reader must be content with the visual appreciation of these flowers - a task not at all difficult to accomplish. -- Bettye Coughenour, Daylily Journal 52/3 Fall 1997 p. 293
