Publisher's original one-quarter black morocco leather over black cloth-covered boards, spine is lettered in gilt, front cover has embossed oval portrait of Jordan, top page edge in gilt, outer page edges are deckled, with the original printed dust jackets, lettered in black on the spine, and with embossed oval portrait of Jordan on the front cover, thick sm 4to. This edition was limited to 390 numbered copies, each signed by Jordan and printed on handmade paper and specially bound in leather over cloth; this is copy no. 96. David Starr Jordan was an American ichthyologist, educator, eugenicist, and peace activist. He was president of Indiana University and was the founding president of Stanford University (from Wiki). This massive work is a record of his life and his friendships. No ownership marks. A touch of light edge wear to the bindings, the complete dust jackets have some closed vertical tears that have been repaired, spines of dust jackets lightly sunned, some pages are uncut and unopened; a tight, bright and clean copy in near fine condition in near fine dust jackets.
