The British author recalls becoming familiar with Whitman's writings while a student at Cambridge, then traveling to America to meet him in 1877 & again for a few visits in 1884. The notes from those visits were used to create this book, in which he also addresses Whitman's relationship with the child/children he may have had & with Ralph Waldo Emerson, & explores the notion of Whitman as a "prophet." Orig. published in May 1906 & in a Second Edition in Dec. of that same year, this is a Reprint from Sept. 1921, in 187 pages + 3 pages listing some of this author's other works. Hardcover 12mo (5.25" x 7.5") has light olive green cloth over boards, stamped with bright gilt lettering to front & spine. Condition is VG: though an EX-LIB copy (with faint stamps & markings to outer page edges & front endpapers, with card pocket), it is generally quite clean with the occasional spot or smudge. Binding strong & square, front hinge cracked. Pages creamy white with moderate tanning, but unmarked. Bumping to corners & spine tips, with slight fraying to latter. No DJ.
