About this title

Synopsis:

It was the summer of 1890 in New York City. Florence Tod, an ebullient young woman in her mid-twenties, more suffragette than Victorian, must fight the formidable financier, John Piermont Morgan, to solve a possible murder. Following the instructions on a mysterious gold tablet, J.P. Morgan's librarian ingests poison. It was embedded in an illumination of a unique Hildegard von Bingen manuscript. Florence and her cousin, Isabella Stewart Gardner, discover the librarian's body. When Isabella secretly removes the gold tablet, she sets off a chain of events that involve Florence and her cousin in a dangerous conspiracy. Florence must overcome her fears of the physical world, the tensions of her relationship with Isabella and deal with the attentions of an attractive Pinkerton detective in the course of solving the mystery of the librarian's death. The many worlds of the Gilded Age-the ghettos to the gambling dens, the bordellos to the bastions of capitalism-are recreated in this historical novel of the "Gilded Age."
