Description:

Octavo, 20 parts in 19, in the original green wrappers. ALL wrappers are correct. All Advertisers, slips and rear ads are present, except for the scarce "Letts Son & Steer" slip in part XI. 40 inserted plates by Hablot K. Browne (Phiz), who also designed the green wrappers. All plates are very good to fine. The Duke of Leeds copy, with his ownership signature on front wrap of part VIII. First issue of text in part XI, with "Capatin" for "Captain" on page 324, last line; first issue Advertiser in part XIII, with "October 1847" in perfect type. Part XIV, first issue text, with the word "if" omitted on page 426, line 9. Part XIX/XX with the first issue vignette title, erroneously showing Captain Cuttle's hook on his left arm. MESSAGE TO HATTON & CLEAVER: Although Hatton & Cleaver calls for the Chapman & Hall ad in part XIX/XX to be dated "April 1848" as the earliest state, the present copy is dated "March 1848." We know of just one other copy of this earliest ad. Eight line errata. There are a couple of "firsts" in Dombey and Son. The plate "On the dark road" in part XVIII is the first of what became known as the "dark plates." dombey is also the first appearance of the "horizontal plates" on which the subject is rotated 90 degrees. An outstanding set in every respect, given the rare earliest state of the ad in part XIX/XX, the plates, all very good to fine, the bright wrappers and the earliest state of the text. Housed in a custom purple quarter leather slipcase. All this and more: the present copy has a pedigree. It is from the famed Hatton & Cleaver collection. Bookseller Inventory #
