About this Item

Limited Editions Club printing of one of Dickens's most moving works, and one of the best-selling in its day ? the unexpected plot twist in the fifth number caused a national outburst of feeling in Great Britain. Set in London at the beginning of the industrial age and the great railroad boom, Dombey and Son appears here with an introduction by John T. Winterich and 12 color plates done by Henry C. Pitz, who also supplied numerous in-text black-and-white pen drawings and decorated the endpapers with line drawings of the novel's major characters. The work was designed by Joseph Blumenthal, who chose a linotype Baskerville font, and printed by Peter Beilenson in Mount Vernon, NY. The Russell-Rutter Co. bound the volumes in full rose-red buckram with decorative paper spine labels, in a slipcase repeating the endpaper designs. This is numbered copy 1463 of 1500 printed, signed at the colophon by the illustrator; the appropriate LEC newsletter is laid in. 8vo (25.3 cm, 10"). 2 vols. I: xv, [1], 396 pp.; 6 col. plts. II: [10], 798, [2] pp.; 6 col. plts. Bibliography of the Fine Books Published by The Limited Editions Club, 274. Bindings as above; spines gently sunned as often with this set, otherwise clean and fresh in a slightly age-toned slipcase. Front pastedown of vol. I with rubber-stamped date (Apr. 19 1957). An appealing copy. Bookseller Inventory # 30538
