Book Description Lutterworth Press, UK, 1977. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Dust jacket complete except price clipped. Original cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks. 199 pages clean and tight. The life story of Andrew Stoddart, one of the most romantic figures in British sport of the 1880s and 1890s, was first published privately in 1970. The author, David Frith, produced a limited edition of only 400, and it won him the Cricket Society Jubilee Literary Award. David Frith spent three years researching Stoddart's life and times. The outcome is a fascinating chronicle of England's Test matches against Australia as well as some of the rugby internationals of the 1880s (Stoddart captained England at both sports.) So much that had been forgotten concerning this remarkable sportsman is brought to light in the book. He once scored 485 in an afternoon club match; his 173 in a Melbourne Test match remained the highest by an England captain in Australia for 80 years; his kicking ability forced rugby rule changes; he made 221 in his final first-class match; he took part in numerous grand partnerships with W.G. Grace-and often outshone the Old Man; there was no more popular cricketer of his day in England or Australia; he toured West Indies and America; he captained the first Barbarians rugby team. All these achievements and much more are recorded in this charming story. When Andrew Stoddart committed suicide in 1915 he was widely mourned. When "My Dear Victorious Stod" first appeared it was applauded and widely and well reviewed (see back of jacket). This new edition will please those many cricket-lovers who have for some time been canvassing for its reappearance. Size: 8vo. Bookseller Inventory # 141804
