Description:

This book was inspired by a man, Jack Rainsberger, on Death Row in Nevada State Prison. It was edited and compiled by an `inside' and an `outside' editor - Dovie C. Mathis (inmate) and Stephen Levine (poet). Its an antholgy of work (often poetic) compiled around the experiences of Death Row - mostly from inmate viewpoints but also wardens (Duffy). Some of the contributors include: Jack Rainsberger, Daniel Allan Roberts, Byron Eshelman, Edgar Smith, Robert Massie, Leaman Smith, Joshua Hill, Caryl Chessman, and Dovie Mathis. As the jacket suggests `these are the sounds of the spirit struggling to make it back to the surface'. Each creative piece is lead off w/ a short bio. and a b/w photo of the author. His name is presented alone on a complete black page. Warden Duffy and Chaplain Eshelman view the ROW from their perspectives. Cond: Dion Wright painting brightens the black paper wrapper. All edges are rubbed, tail lightly frayed. Several small name stamps of prev. owner. Marginal notes/marks on five pages. Tight in binding. Has been well loved. 242 pages. Quote from p.129 ( Robert Massie): " Actually, it is only fitting that my life should culminate in the gas chamber. From the time I was seven years old I have been a ward of the state. From the years of seven to ten I was placed." Size: 8vo. Seller Inventory # 000579
