About this Item

(GERSHWIN, George). Decca Presents Selections from George Gershwin's Folk Opera, PORGY AND BESS. Featuring Todd Duncan, Baritone; Anne Brown, Soprano; The Eva Jessye Choir. All from the Original New York Production, and the Decca Symphony Orchestra under the Direction of Alexander Smallens. [issued as "Decca Album No. 145]. Four-Record Set; four, 12-inch, 78 rpm, recordings in original publisher's pictorial folder. Front cover reproduces a striking photograph (by Vandamm?) of a scene from the original New York production, with African-American cast, and the inside covers reproduce scenes of the recording sessions and singers. Based upon the play Porgy by Du Bose and Dorothy Heyward, "This play, in three acts and nine scenes, presents the story of Porgy a crippled Negro beggar, and his woman Bess. The scene is laid in Catfish Row, a former mansion of the aristocracy, but now a Negro tenement on the water front of Charleston, South Carolina." The final record (of four) has a two-inch crack, else the four recordings, and the pictorial holder, are in very good condition. Bookseller Inventory # 49583
