Synopsis: Winner of the Locus Award for Best First Novel for The Bohr Maker, the author traces the fate of a group of humans who survive the galaxy's destruction in the shelter of planetary barriers. Original.

Review: Deception Well is a powerful planet, able to fend off the deadly nanotech plagues of an age-old war, but also hostile to the would-be settlers who have come here seeking safe haven. After building the orbital city Silk, the first colonists of the Well were killed by a mysterious plague. The new Silkens refuse to descend to the planet's surface, except for Jupiter and his rebel forces who are seeking a communion with the planet. Although Jupiter fails, his cult-like followers take up the cause again with his son Lot, a natural-born leader who might not be so natural after all.

Product Description: It lies at the foot of a space elevator 200 miles below the sky city of Silk: Deception Well â a lush tropical world consuming all who reach its alluring surface. Ten years ago, fiery prophet Jupiter Apolinario stormed Silk with his fanatical followers, determined to reach Deception Well. There, they believed they would find not destruction but ecstatic communion. Yet in the resulting battle with Silken security forces, many of the cult members died â as did, by all accounts, Jupiter himself. Eighteen-year-old Lot, Jupiterâs son, has spent the intervening years as a prisoner/ward of the Silken authorities. Now he sets out to learn the truth about his fatherâs fate and about the real nature of Deception Well. And in doing so, he will discover the terrifying secrets of a dying city, his own disturbing calling as a charismatic prophet, and the razor-thin line between bliss and damnationâ¦.
