Book Description London: Chatto & Windus for Sussex University: First edition, 1976. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 8vo., xxii, 376pp., map, appendix, glossary, biographical notes, bibliography, original cloth gilt. A VG+ copy in a VG+ pictorial dustwrapper. 'These kings do not marry,' Duarte Barbosa wrote in 1516 of the Kerala region on India's southwestern coast, 'only each has a mistress, a lady of great lineage and family, which is called nayre.' Foreigners have remained fascinated ever since with the matrilineal system of family and inheritance followed until recently by a number of Kerala castes, but especially the Nayars. This book traces the decline of that system in the princely state of Travancore, from the mid-19th century, under the impact of proselytizing Christian missionaries, a cash economy, Western-style education, improved communications, rigid English interpretation of traditional law, and rapid growth in population. By the 1900's conflict within the matrilineal joint-family was loosening Nayars' hold on the land, which was passing to prospering Syrian Christians and even low castes. Among the educated, there was keen resentment of the privileges of caste Hindus and bitter rivalry for posts in the all-important government service. This is not a study of Nayars alone, but an attempt to present a social and political history of a fascinating area. As well as a contribution to the regional history of South Asia, this book will be of interest to social anthropologists, students of 'modernization' processes, and political scientists looking for the background to the rise of Kerala's vigorous Communist Party in the 1940s and 1950s.
