About this Item

Crimson cloth, gilt letters on spine, maroon & color illus. dust jacket, maps on flyleaves, 96 pp., BW and color illus. Issued in conjuinction with a 1987 exhibition of furniture made by craftsmen of the Mahantongo Valley of Northumberland County in central Pennsylvania. "Provides an historical perspective to the settlement of the Mahantongo Valley, including a look at past and present cultural and social factors, and describes various pieces, furniture makers and decorators, history of ownership, and the inspiration for various decorative motifs. Reed has unravelled many of the clues and attributed heretofore anonymous pieces to specific makers and decorators. Don Yoder's essay gives some background to life in the Mahantongo Vallery based on Yoder's fieldwork in the 1940s and an analysis of the account book of cabinetmaker Johannes Haas (1814-1856). Finally, a checklist of all the known pieces of painted Mahantongo Valley furniture and the illustrations of these pieces make this the definitive work on the subject and invaluable to collectors and scholars." (dj) One of 1500 cvopies. VG (slight scuffs to DJ; former owner's signature on first page; otherwise quite nice.). Bookseller Inventory # 153814

About this title

Synopsis:

The decorated furniture from southeastern Pennsylvania's Mahantongo Valley stands distinctly apart from the painted pieces usually associated with the Pennsylvania Germans of the region. The first public exhibition devoted exclusively to the furniture was featured at Bucknell's Center Gallery in October 1987. Illustrated mostly in black and white with a few plates in color.
