Description:

New York. 1989. Weidenfeld & Nicolson. 1st Edition. Very Good In Dustjacket. 165 pages. February 1989. hardcover. Cover: Jackie Schuman. ISBN: 1555841643. inventory # 24071. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Nettie Jones’ keenly anticipated new work, is a strong, erotically charged historical tale. It is also a novel of race and racism in America - a sometimes cautionary fable of those brave or foolish souls who cross the boundaries and taboos set by our society. Raphael de Baptiste, young and beautiful, with but a ‘chocolate drop’ of Negro blood in her veins, leaves her Detroit home and her black lover in the 1920s to become a nurse - a white nurse - farther north. There in the beautiful wilderness of Leelanau County, she meets Mishe Masaube, a Chippewa Indian, the man she will marry and by whom she will bear three daughters - Blossom Rose, Lilly, and Puma. Each daughter, exotically beautiful, with looks that defy all racial labels, ventures out into the world to discover her destiny, and the double-edged sword of assimilation. Haunting and magical, MISCHIEF MAKERS is a visionary novel of color and class in America, and it confirms Nettie Jones as one of the major female black writers in the United States today. Synopsis: Raphael de Baptiste, a strong-willed, light-skinned black woman, leaves her Detroit home and moves to Canada, where she marries a Chippewa Indian and raises three daughters who experience discrimination and assimilation when they move out into the world

From Library Journal: Asil and David de Baptiste are well-to-do physicians, founders of a hospital for Negroes in 1920s Detroit. Beautiful daughter Raphael has green eyes and a peachy complexion; her tawny parents will never accept the very black laborer she loves. They send her north to begin a new life as a white woman. Believing her to be white, a Chippewa Indian marries Raphael. One of their daughters is killed by a black man in a riot; another marries a Frenchman whose mother is Moroccan. In this romantic tale of the "great American melting-pot," skin color and racial labels force events for each generation. Add Jones to the list of black female writers whose prose has a lyrical, mystical touch. Maurice Taylor, Brunswick Cty. Lib., Southport, N.C.
