Four portraits, engraved half-title page. iv, 524pp. 8vo, modern blue cloth, green leather label, foxing to margins of half-title and title pages, several pages with a small amount of foxing, bottom margin of title-page trimmed. Philadelphia: Moses Thomas, 1814. First Edition In the November, 1814 issue on pages 433 and 434, is the first appearance in magazine or book form of the poem, Defence of Fort McHenry by Francis Scott Key set to the British tune Anacreon in Heaven. Earlier it had appeared as a broadside and in American newspapers. Today, Key's poem is known as the Star-Spangled Banner and is the United States' national anthem. According to the introduction of page 433, ".we think that their merit (of Key's Defence of Fort McHenry) entitles them to preservation in some more permanent form than the columns of a daily paper."
