About this Item

Miss Ida Marshall's Personal Album kept in the form of a photographically illustrated travelling visitors' book beginning with the 1903 Delhi Coronation Durbar. The album begins just before the Durbar, Nov 30th to Dec 23rd 1902, with a visit to Lahore, the first page with two small photographs of Government House and Lahore city. The page has its title in the form of a clipped address from an envelope and bears the signatures of: E M. Rivaz, C.A.G. Rivaz [Financial Dept], R. Alexander [Lt. East Surrey Regt, extra ADC], L.M.Dennys and two others. The facing page has two 6 x 4ins photographs of the Lieut Governor of the Punjab's Camp at Delhi where the party is noted ads being from Dec 24th 1902 to Jan 12th 1903. Page 3 is headed by the clipped red embossed address of the camp and this and the following two pages have signatures of many of the camp members including: C.M. Rivaz [Hon Sir Charles Montgomery, KCSI, Lt Governor], C.A.P. Rivaz, Eric Drummond [Lt E. G., 4th Gurkha Rifles, ADC], Oliver Swanston [Capt C.O., DSO, 18th Bengal Lancers], A. H. S. Reid [the Hon, Judge of the Chief Court, Lahore], W.O. Clark [The Hon, Chief Judge, Lahore], J. F. Connolly [Revenue & Financial Secretary], Arthur H Pook [Electrical Engineer], F. H. Burton [Under Secretary], C. J. Brown [Inspector General of Police], Lewis Tupper [the Hon C . L., CSI, Financial Commissioner], R. A. Gamble [Accountant General], T. E .L. Bate [Lt Col, CIE, Inspector General of Jails]. These pages also have another photograph of the west front of the Lt Gov of the Punjab's camp and a smaller view of his unique carriage drawn by eight camels. The next four pages are devoted to Mhow and show Colonel Scott of the RHA receiving a DSO, his and his family's signatures and what must have been one of the first motor cars in Mhow. Following pages show views on the journeys out and back on P & O ship Egypt. There are a few other views of Delhi including one of the camel carriage passing the Jama Masjid during the Durbar. The remaining 35 pages show various house parties around Britain - Hartwell House, Cosgrove, Castle Priory, Calehill, Hunt Royde, Mansfield House, Clifton Thorpe, Harleyford, Carradale, Park Place, Chequers Court. The album retains its original quarto red half leather boards but the rear board is detached and most of the leather spine is lacking. The front pastedown bears the signature Ida Marshall and a Miss Marshall is listed as a guest in the Punjab Camp at Delhi. Size: Quarto. Bookseller Inventory # 008138
