About this Item

4to. 4 volumes. Volume I. pp. [24], 534 with engraved portrait of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI (to whom the book is dedicated) following the title. Volume II, pp. [8], 575, [1]. Volume III, pp. [8], 566. Volume IV, pp. [8], 502, [42p. index]. Titles printed in red and black. Bound in full period vellum over boards. The vellum is age-toned/soiled and displays areas of rubbing and wear. The boards show some warping due to vellum shrinkage. An 8.5 cm tear in the vellum near the fore-edge to the front cover of volume IV is professionally repaired. Spine labels contain chipping. Interior pages display periodic age-toning, browning, scattered foxing, occasional spots of staining and wear; some pages are uniformly tanned/browned. A couple of small marginal tears are neatly sealed. A 4.5 x 2 cm area in the blank outer margin of p. 177 (vol. II) is patched with early paper. Pietro Giannone (1676-1748) Italian Neapolitan lawyer, scholar and historian. His great work, "Dell istoria civile del Regno di Napoli" describes the development of civil and legal institutions in the Kingdom of Naples from the fall of the Roman empire to the first decades of the 18th century. Giannone argued for the dominance of civil power over that of the Roman Catholic Church. Publication of the work caused a major controversy, including public demonstrations organized by the Neapolitan clergy. The book was ultimately condemned by the Church and Giannone fled Italy for Austria. The English antiquarian Richard Rawlinson helped introduce Giannone s book into Britain where it achieved some influence [see Trevor-Roper, "Pietro Giannone and Great Britain" in The Hist. Journ. (Sept. 1996)]. [Gamba 2254; Brunet II, 1584; Graesse III, p. 79]. Bookseller Inventory # 001011
