Description:

Folio (301 x 203 mm), pp [xii, including blank leaf] 182 [2, terminal blank], with engraved title and 19 engraved plates after prelims and preceding the main text; repair to lower blank margin of title, some slight marginal spotting, a fine, crisp, unpressed copy, with excellent impressions of the plates, in contemporary limp vellum, labelled in manuscript on the spine.First edition of this beautifully illustrated treatise on distillation and the elixir vitae, thought of as a liquid equivalent of the philosopher's stone, granting eternal youth or immortality. This work appears to be more a treatise on distilling various plant (and some animal and mineral) essences, from trees, herbs and spices, fruits, etc., and the applications of such essences, along with their chemical properties, than a treatise on alchemy per se. As such it should be viewed in the context of the newly founded Accademia dei Lincei and its programme of a thorough investigation of nature. The author was the apothecary at the monastery of Santa Caterina a Formiello in Naples, and was a member of a circle of Neapolitan savants including Giambattista della Porta, Ferrante Imperato, Nicola Stiglioa, and Fabio Colonna. He corresponded with the Accademia dei Lincei, and was visited by Johannes Faber who was in Naples for two months visiting the Wunderkammern of Imperato and others, collecting plant and seed specimens, fossils, and other curiosities on behalf of Prince Cesi.'The author of the kingdom's first published pharmacopoeia, the protophysician Quinzio Buongiovanni, insisted that apothecaries be prohibited from preparing "compositions with simples" without having been inspected first by one of the guild officials and the protophysician. For this reason, Buongiovanni was present when the head apothecary of the Dominican monastery of Santa Caterina a Formello in Naples, Fra Donato D'Eremita, prepared his famous "elixir vitae". But then again, Buongiovanni may have been invited by D'Eremita, along with the other dignitaries present (Giambattista della Porta and Nicola Stigliola), to launch his product as part of a publicity stunt' (David Gentilcore, Healers and healing in early modern Italy, pp 41-42). In fact this event is described on page 4 of Donato's treatise, and illustrated by the first plate of the book.Donato's 'substantial treatise on the Elixir of Life shows that he was thoroughly conversant with alchemical processes and practices: the first three books on the elixir are followed by the long fourth book which deals with the great number of substances used in its preparation and the necessary recipes. One of the most noteworthy features of the book is the engraved title and the series of 19 plates which show furnaces, retorts and various alchemical experiments in progress.'The fact that this striking book has escaped the researches of most of the bibliographers must be due to its rarity' (Duveen). The engraved title carries the dedication to Ferdinand II, Grand Duke of Tuscany, within a cartouche with the Medici arms. The first plate depicts a group of scholars and friars in front of a massive water bath, with a group of stills on the floor in front, and books on the ledge behind; this is surrounded by a border depicting flasks and festoons of flasks and stills. The other 18 plates are each composed of a central plate depicting a still, an engraved description beneath, and the two surrounded by a three-sided border (thus each plate is in fact printed from three separate copper plates). These borders feature four different compositions, repeated, two of them four times and two of them five times. One border, which occurs on plates 2, 5, 9, 13, and 17, features Donato's name and device; he may have been the designer of the images.Duveen p 176; Wellcome 2069; Krivatsy 3672; OCLC lists Yale, Delaware, NLM, Trinity College, Chemical Heritage Foundation, Wisconsin, Getty, and New York Public.
